The Alabama Big 3 HBCUs refer to Alabama A&M University, Alabama State University, and Tuskegee University—three of the most historic and influential Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the state of Alabama. Each institution has played a critical role in advancing Black education, leadership, and civil rights over more than a century.
Since 2006, the alumni chapters of these universities in the Washington, DC metro area have joined forces to host the Alabama Big 3 HBCU Cookout—a signature summer event bringing together graduates, family, and friends for a day of food, fun, and fellowship. This event continues to grow, serving not only as a social gathering but also as a symbol of unity and shared heritage.
In 2008, the collaboration expanded with the launch of the Alabama Big 3 Scholarship Gala, a formal evening dedicated to raising funds in support of current and future students from the three institutions. The gala was held annually for nine years, with the 9th Annual Gala taking place on May 20, 2017. The event celebrated scholarship, honored distinguished alumni, and furthered the mission of giving back to each university community.
Together, the Bulldogs (Alabama A&M), Hornets (Alabama State), and Golden Tigers (Tuskegee) continue to demonstrate the power of unity among HBCU alumni. The Alabama Big 3 serves as a vibrant reminder that when we come together, we celebrate more than just school spirit—we invest in legacy, leadership, and the future.
